The field of artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly evolving and this year’s TED Talks conference has embraced the theme of “Possibility,” with AI taking center stage as one of the biggest possibilities on everyone’s mind.
AI is one area that has captured everyone’s attention on various aspects of our lives, including work, art, culture, creativity, and even our very essence of being human. With the power of AI in mind, the organizers of TED have assembled a lineup of movers and thinkers who are leading the charge in this exciting and rapidly evolving field.
The significance of AI cannot be overstated, as it is already being hailed as a game-changer on par with the internet. It’s no wonder that TED’s head honcho, Chris Anderson, has urged everyone to pay attention to this topic. He emphasized that the conversation surrounding AI is the most important one we will be having, for better or for worse, and we must get it right. With such high stakes, this year’s TED Talks were thought-provoking, inspiring, and ultimately a game-changer.
As we move forward in this article, we will explore the power and potential of AI, drawing insights and highlights from TED 2023.
The world of Artificial Intelligence is buzzing with innovation as tech giants such as OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft work tirelessly to develop increasingly advanced human-like chatbots and artificial systems. With the massive amount of data available on the internet, along with predictive models and deep neural networks, AI is being hyped as one of the most significant tech disruptions and innovations since the invention of the internet. No wonder it was one of the focal points of TED 2023 that was held at Vancouver, Canada between April 17th – 21st 2023. The conference started with a session on AI featuring Greg Brockman, president, chairman, and co-founder of OpenAI, the company behind the highly-debated ChatGPT platform.
Key Takeaways from Greg Brockman, co-founder of OpenAI
Greg wowed the audience with the latest features of their cutting-edge AI, ChatGPT-4. He kicked off the presentation by asking the AI to whip up a unique and delicious vegetarian meal. He then showcased the system’s new plug-ins, which include the image-to-text AI DALL-E, grocery delivery service Instacart, and Zapier automation platform. During his talk, Brockman also introduced a new plug-in that allows the AI to verify information by accessing the internet and a Python programming feature that enables it to sift through vast amounts of data with ease. Using an Excel sheet containing over 167,000 published AI papers, the AI can now create visual representations just like a data scientist.
Brockman’s TED Talk on AI was met with enthusiastic applause and even a standing ovation from some attendees, as he showcased the latest features of ChatGPT-4, OpenAI’s controversial AI platform. However, Chris Anderson, the head of TED, expressed some skepticism about Brockman’s optimistic view of the impact of AI on society and human ethics. After the presentation, Anderson raised some important concerns about the ethical implications of AI, sparking a lively debate on the topic.
Following Greg Brockman’s presentation, Yejin Choi, a computer science and engineering professor at the University of Washington, took the stage at TED 2023. Choi presented a sobering talk that highlighted the shortcomings of AI systems in terms of common sense and human ethics. She cited the “paperclip problem,” a game created in 2017 to demonstrate how an AI, when tasked with producing as many paperclips as possible, could unwittingly lead to the destruction of humanity.
Continuing the conversation on the risks and ethical considerations around AI, other speakers at TED 2023 also addressed these concerns. Gary Marcus, an author and self-proclaimed “AI Prognosticator,” emphasized the significant dangers that AI presents to society. He expressed concern that AI could manipulate humans and spread misinformation and disinformation. Marcus went on to argue that global governance is necessary to manage the risks associated with AI, and that the technology poses a significant threat to humanity in many different areas.
Eliezer Yudkowsky, an AI researcher, warned that a six-month freeze on AI development won’t be enough to ensure its safety. He was referring to the open letter calling for a pause in AI development for at least six months to ensure its safety. He argued that AIs could create new weapons and manipulate governments through the use of false information. Following Yudkowsky’s talk, Alexandr Wang, the CEO of Scale AI, discussed the growing military threats and data challenges posed by AI, and called for more tech companies to partner with the government to ensure the technology is used to support democracy.
Sal Khan, the founder of Khan Academy, presented with a positive note. Khan Academy has partnered with OpenAI to incorporate a chatbot tutor into its education platform, which helps students with various tasks such as utilizing the Socratic method and interacting with AI-created book characters like Gatsby or chat embodiments of the Mississippi River.
End note
Despite the incredible positives of rapidly advancing AI technology, the leaders at the TED 2023 conference view AI technology as both amazing and concerning. They recognize the potential for it to bring positive change, but also acknowledge the risk of harm to humanity. To ensure the safe and inclusive development of AI and advanced chatbots like GPT-4, they stress the importance of ongoing discussion, careful deliberation, and government oversight.
